Hot Water Repairs, Replacements or Upgrades FAQ’s

Different types of hot water systems

In New Zealand, we have 2 different types of electric hot water cylinder – Low Pressure and Mains Pressure. A low pressure cylinder can only handle a pressure of 70kPa, where as a Mains Pressure Cylinder can handle over 500kPa – so as you can see, there is a big difference.

There will be a sticker around the top of your cylinder saying what sort of cylinder you have.

Low Pressure questions

Why is my hot water pressure in the shower not very good? – You probably have a Low Pressure Cylinder, this means the hot water pressure is 7 times less than the cold pressure – Might be time to consider an upgrade.

Why is my low pressure hot water cylinder overflowing on the roof or to the drain? – The pressure valves on your cylinder need a service or replacement.

Why has my hot water has gone cold? – The element has burnt out or the thermostat needs replacing

Mains Pressure cylinders

The mains pressure cylinder can handle a pressure over 7 times higher than a low pressure cylinder, and also has pressure control valves, and they get worn out and start discharging more water than they should.

Why are my cylinder overflow pipes dripping or running constantly? – Your valves need a service or replacement.

Why am I seeing leaking from the bottom of the cylinder? – The cylinder has started to leak and needs to be replaced ASAP before it bursts.

How long should a hot water cylinders last? – Installed correctly approx 15- 20 years

Muir Plumbing can replace or upgrade your leaking hot water cylinder or advise of changing to gas if preferred. Hot water cylinder can even be installed outside!

Preventive Action against hot water cylinder leaks, damage and floods
Muir Plumbing distribute a handy tool against all sorts of leaks but especially Hot water Cylinder leaks. We have a Leak Alarm device that will alert you when the first few drops of water leak from your hot water cylinder.

If you have a cylinder over 10 years old, you need a Leak Alarm

The Alarm has a moisture sensor plate and when positioned at the base of a hot water cylinder, the alarm will sound when the first drop of water hits it, giving you time to call a plumber and not having to deal with wet carpet, rotting floorboards and mouldy Gib board.

Call us for an inexpensive solution to prevent expensive water damage to your property.

Modern taps have rubber pipes that can have a life of only 10 years or so. The Leak alarm is great for detecting leaks in kitchen cupboards, in vanities before your cabinetry is damaged.

Washing machine hoses often leak and the Leak Alarm when positioned behind a washing machine will detect the moisture and alert you before damage occurs. Only $20 installed (when we are already working on your property).
